Through vacation exchange programs, timeshare owners can travel to other popular destinations around the world.

Most timeshare resorts are affiliated with at least one of the two major exchange companies (RCI or II, and sometimes both.) You don't have to join either of these but you can't join if they are not affiliated with the  resort where you own a timeshare.

Yearly membership dues to RCI are $89 and Interval International dues are $79.  These dues in the past have undergone a change so be sure you inquire for the current fee.  You will get a cheaper rate if you sign up for a 2 or 3 year membership when you join.

Each of these companies is affiliated with thousands of resorts you can exchange into by paying an exchange fee and giving up your week.

In addition you have access to 12 extra getaway weeks without exchanging anything.  These are weeks that many times will be priced as low as $199 for an entire week somewhere.  At the very least, they are generally priced less than what a maintenance payment would be and you don't pay an exchange fee.  This benefit has been the prime motivation for some timeshare owners to buy their first timeshare.
